Former Commissioner of Police, COP George Alex Mensah, has said the Ghana Police Service cannot punish the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akufo-Dampare, over an alleged conspiracy to remove him from office.
According to him, even if the commission finds him guilty, it is the state that will have to take him on and prove the case against him.
The man was on leave before officially retiring on September 18, 2023 after 31 years of service, but leaked tapes of Dr Dampare’s administration suggest he has no intention of helping the ruling party. I heard voices. If he remains president until the 2024 election.
He was in the company of another police officer, Superintendent George Asare, along with Bugli Nabu, the former northern regional chairman of the New Patriotic Party, who admitted to recording the conversation.
Officer Alex Mensah (RTD) then appeared before a parliamentary committee tasked with investigating the contents of the tape and made even more damning claims about the IGP, calling him the worst IGP in the history of this force.
The parliamentary committee is yet to submit its report after questioning the parties to the matter, including the IGP.
But while now-retired Officer Alex Mensah seems cool about the incident, he told PM Express that even his colleague, Superintendent George Asare, who is still on the job, deserves punishment as well. He said he had not committed a crime.
“The commission is seeking the truth and is doing a perfect job because it has all the truth to help it compile its report.
“Unfortunately for them, I’m not a police officer anymore. But what did he do? [Supt. George Asare] end? Should he be prosecuted because he went and spoke to politicians? For what? If you look into the National Police Agency’s rules in detail, you will find that if you do anything that causes a political uproar, you may be charged with a crime. And the one who caused the commotion is the one who brought this. [The recording] to the media. “There was nothing like a conspiracy,” he reiterated.
“The police can’t do anything to me. If the commission finds out that I committed a crime, the state can do something against me.” It doesn’t matter.
When asked if he would retire after receiving all his benefits, he replied: “Yes, nothing is at stake. If there is a crime, even if I am a criminal, I have to go to court and prove that I actually committed the crime,” he said. insisted.
According to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Bekwai constituency in the Ashanti region, the entire issue has been exaggerated and claims there was never a conspiracy to remove the IGP as suggested.
He argued that the conversation was private and that the focus should be on the person who leaked it, not the person who was having the normal conversation.
A former police chief has already told a parliamentary committee that the tapes were doctored to achieve some nefarious purpose.
“I didn’t say anything wrong on the tape. I wasn’t planning a coup, I wasn’t going to sell cocaine or steal anything. I didn’t say anything wrong in the tape. Everything I said is true, and as I said before the committee, I will say it here and anywhere if you give me a chance.”
What sin have we committed? Is it a violation to have a private conversation with someone? Then you have to record it and find the person who brought it up. He is the one who caused the problem. He is the person who should be prosecuted. People just misunderstand everything. A private conversation is a private conversation, and if it is illegally recorded and taken to court, its contents will be destroyed. ”
The former COP claimed that Buguri Nabu, who invited him and Superintendent Asare to the meeting, was clearly in cahoots with someone and planned the entire incident for reasons best known to him.
He told Evans-Mensah that the scandal was actually a blessing for him.
When asked if he regretted what happened, he replied: As you know, God has his own way of blessing people. Without this tape, we probably wouldn’t be here. My name and photo wouldn’t be out there now. Now, if you go to my constituency, everyone knows me. Everyone is looking for me. ”
Friends I haven’t heard from in years call me from everywhere in America, England, and Germany. God has his own way of raising people. Sometimes you won’t understand, but in the end you will understand and say, “I thought this was a problem, but it was the way the Lord used to raise you.” ”
