The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has intervened in the controversy surrounding the illegal mining crisis, questioning the government’s approach to combating cankers.
President of the Ghana Bar Association, Yaw Acheampong Boafo, in a press conference on Wednesday, October 18, called on the government to target corrupt politicians who are believed to be funding and profiting from the threat.
The GBA called on governments to be “honest and bold and highlight the evil acts of powerful interests involved in the wanton destruction of the environment.”
He said those found guilty of environmental destruction should be dealt with decisively, regardless of their personal status or political background.
“The harmful effects of ‘galamsey’ are all around us and cannot be ignored. Land used for growing food and cash crops is being affected. Galamsey contributes to child deaths. Despite government efforts and assurances to address this threat, there appears to be a general consensus that not much is being done to deal with it effectively and thoroughly. ” he said.
In this regard, Achiampong-Boafo said the GBA could still do much to effectively address threats that pose a grave threat to the country’s survival, especially in this time of climate change concerns. He pointed out that he had an opinion.

“We call on governments, political leaders and key stakeholders to show more political will and integrity in decisively addressing the galamsey threat. Those in real power will be identified and dealt with according to the law.”
“Galamsey is a capital-intensive illegal activity. The heavy machinery and other machinery and chemicals used in galamsey cannot and cannot be purchased by the young men and women arrested at galamsey sites. People are not the ones giving permission to enter forest reserves.

“Galamsey can only thrive if powerful people in society actively finance such threats. A rational and irresistible conclusion is that corrupt public officials, politicians, traditional It is controlled and financed by the rulers and a network of wealthy and powerful business interests.
“Indeed, if we continue to pretend as we do now, we will be playing the ostrich with our future,” he stressed.
He added: “If we refuse to act, we will be completely destroyed as a nation by the frivolous gluttony of the elites.”
