Kinsley Ofosu, the sole survivor of the famous 1992 stowaway ‘Deadly Voyage’, has been arrested on suspicion of being involved in a €120,000 fraud.
Kinsley Ofosu made international headlines in 1992 when she miraculously survived a stowaway trip.
Police said Ofosu was arrested from his hideout in Prampuram, Accra metropolitan area, after a relentless investigation spanning about 25 years.
Ofosu was arrested on Saturday, October 14, and later arraigned at Takoradi Circuit Court B.
Detective Inspector Robert Yawson, prosecuting, told Presiding Judge Henrietta Cherway’s court that the suspect had been on police’s wanted list since 1998.
After nearly 25 years of relentless efforts, police arrested Ofosu on Saturday, October 14th. He added that all efforts to arrest him have been unsuccessful.
Prosecutors prayed to the court to remand the suspect so that police can complete their investigation.
According to prosecutors, the suspect has vacated his residence in Tanokrom, a suburb of Takoradi, to an unknown location, making it difficult for police to trace him.
He prayed for the case to be remanded, arguing that the suspect could interfere in the investigation if granted bail.
A plea by the defendant’s lawyer, Victor Owusu, for his client to be granted bail was denied.
Kingsley Ofosu was therefore remanded to police custody to appear in court again on Monday, October 30, 2023.
Germany-based plaintiff Charles Oemen claims he met the defendant in Germany in 1997 after the defendant made international headlines with his miraculous escape from the MC Ruby cargo ship.
According to the plaintiff, he decided to transport some vehicles and printing machinery to Ghana through Kingsley Ofosu, and Ofosu agreed.
He claims to have bought a Mercedes-Benz, a tanker, a Nissan two-axle, an Opel, a printing machine, and a number of other items worth around 240,000 Deutsche Marks (equivalent to 120,000 euros) at the time.
The car and goods were transported to Ofosu in Ghana and that was the end of it all. He said he had not been contacted before his arrest on Saturday.
How Kingsley Ofosu became internationally famous
In 1992, Kingsley Ofosu made international headlines after surviving a genocide of African stowaways by the crew of the MC Rugby, a Bahamian-registered cargo ship with a Ukrainian crew.
