Losing 3-1 to Germany was a humbling experience for the United States men’s national team, and now to answer it, they will reach the they face a familiar foe in Ghana. This will be the fifth time the USMNT have faced the Black Stars with three straight matches coming at World Cups in the past. I’m looking to improve after facing Germany
Due to commitments from Concacaf and the UEFA Nations League, it can be difficult for the United States to schedule matchups at the level of Germany and Ghana, which is why this is such an important friendly for them. As they host the 2026 World Cup, Gregg Berhalter and the U.S. Soccer Federation. they will have to be creative to provide the team with competitive matches as they will not have to go through the qualifiers, which is one of the reasons why they will take part in the 2024 Copa America. Games like this are opportunities to prove themselves up front from the competition and it’s something midfielder Brenden Aaronson spoke about on Morning Footy.
“There’s a lot of great things to take away. First of all, to have a game like Germany that we’ve played, to play a top team like that is always great,” Aaronson said. “We haven’t had a lot of opportunities like that and I think playing it on stage in Connecticut when we’ve sold out is great for us. It’s taught us a lot and we’ve learned so many things.”
When the United States is able to dominate Concacaf, it can be difficult to pinpoint where they need to improve, where a loss to Germany can be quite positive in the long run as long as the team improves in those areas. Berhalter has already highlighted the need to stay in defensive shape and look for Folarin Balogun which you should look for when facing Ghana, but Aaronson’s words ring true, the USMNT need more games against top opposition and will be less of a shocker when the competition is tougher at the World Cup.
The United States has lost just two straight games under Burhalter, most recently in 2019, so chances are the Black Stars will bounce back.
Prophecy
With a few lineup changes, especially Kristoffer Lund coming in at left back to push Sergino Dest back to his favored right side, the United States will turn things around with a win and Balogun will also score. Choose: United States 2, Ghana 1
