Following the recent military attacks in Galle and Tempane in the Upper East Region, one of the victims has tragically passed away.
Eight residents who were detained and transported to Accra after the incident have now been released, although some remain in critical condition.
The brutal military action, which took place on Sunday, October 29, 2023, is said to have stemmed from a retaliatory attack on national security personnel by local vigilante groups in Garu.
Gull MP Albert Arazuruga addressed the media, expressing deep regret at the military’s actions and calling them unacceptable.
He lamented the loss of life and called on the government to take appropriate measures, including compensating the victims.
Mr. Arazuruga also emphasized the need for accountability, saying that the military is funded by people’s taxes.
“We are sad to announce that one of the victims of military brutality in Galle has died. It is a very sad development. Our young people and the community are very saddened. We are very disappointed in the actions. And we are also disappointed in the government. What happened in Galle is the most barbaric. It is the most unfortunate. The residents who were arrested earlier were released on Friday. Some made it home safely, but others’ conditions worsened and they had to be taken to medical facilities.”
“We have already asked the government to compensate the victims and may have to take legal action if possible. We believe that the treatment of the Garu people has not been fair. I think we need to address the fact that the military takes Ghanaians for granted. It’s our taxes that bought the uniforms they wear. It’s our taxes that buy the cars and guns. It’s tax.”
Meanwhile, National Security Minister Albert Kan Dapaa is scheduled to appear in parliament on Thursday, November 9, to provide an update on the situation.
