CAIRO – November 12, 2023: Egypt is an export hub for African countries, while South Africa is a source for assembling cars, either fully or semi-disassembled, according to Nissan Motors Egypt CEO Mohamed Abdel Samad.
Abdel Samad pointed out that his company is cooperating with the Egyptian government in the process of replacing cars over 20 years old, being among the first participants in the initiative and supporting the government’s steps in this matter.
This was during the events of the African Automotive Forum, held on the sidelines of the Intra-African Trade Fair hosted by Egypt from November 9 to 15.
According to Abdel Samad, Nissan has achieved a localization rate in cars assembled in Egypt that exceeds 40%. He said his company is the only one with an assembly base in Egypt and Africa for the past 60 years. Additionally, they plan to expand into Nigeria and Ghana in the near future to provide affordable switching solutions and low-cost products to customers.
He explained that providing smooth transition solutions requires collaboration between all parties, as well as working to strengthen local adaptation
On another note, he emphasized that the transition to electric vehicles is a top priority, adding that the company provides battery services in Cairo, but expansion to this system requires more investment.
He emphasized that these cars will not only rely on charging but also on natural gas.
Abdel Samad also mentioned that the Egyptian government is working on several fronts to support consumers in owning electric cars, which have become more affordable with the removal of customs barriers.
The government also provided an electric public transport, “electric buses”, he added.
He pointed out that the latest solutions for electric cars include a major plan to manufacture electric vehicles by offering a range of incentives and support, which will have a positive impact on reducing carbon emissions.
