Minister of Construction and Housing Francis Asenso Boakye has distanced himself from the attempted sale of National Assembly Speaker Alban Bagbin’s official residence.
At a breakfast forum on Monday 20 November, the Speaker revealed that his official residence was about to be sold to a private developer.
He did not name those behind the attempted sale, but said if the Land Commission had not identified the building, the property would have been relisted to a private developer.
Asenso Boakye said in an interview. joy news Emefa Appau, The Ministry of Labor and Housing said it was not aware of any such sale.
According to him, “The property is [Speaker’s official residence] As it is not under the control of Works and Housing Ltd., this means that we are unable to manage the property and therefore are not in a position to sell it. ”
The minister argued that “when it comes to the sale of state-owned land and property, it is the duty of the Land Commission to do so, and not of the Ministry of Works and Housing.”
Mr. Asenso-Boakye noted that the ministry may need to meet with the chairman to find out the details of the envisaged sale.
Meanwhile, a minority in parliament is demanding an investigation into the incident.
South Dai MP Rockson Nelson Dafairmekpol said the issue was of national concern and should not be sidelined.
He said private developers could have embarrass the chairman if the documents had been submitted.
“This is a matter that should be left unchallenged,” he said.
However, the Land Commission rejected the chairman’s claims.
In a statement issued on Monday, November 20th and signed by the company’s management, Executive Director Benjamin Arthur, the Commission said this allegation is false.
“The Commission would like to emphasize that at no time has the property in question been sold by the Land Commission to a private developer,” the statement said.
Additionally, detailed background was provided regarding the development of the property since its acquisition in 1920 for government services.
