Premium continental club football will return to the screens this weekend as the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League and TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup officially kick off today.
The CAF Inter-Club Competition will be broadcast across the continent and globally on CAF’s partners, including CAF Pay TV partners beIN Sport (Arabic, English and French), CANAL+ (French), AZAM (English, Swahili), New World TV (English and local languages).
This will include a number of Free to Air broadcasters across the continent, thus ensuring that audiences have access to all continental football clubs. Tinclude SABC, MAX TV, SNRT, AZAM, EPTV, ERTU, TPA, DRTV and TUNIS TV, among others.
The TotalEnergies CAF Champions League has a prize money of USD 4 000 000 – following a massive 40% increase in prize money by CAF across all CAF competitions which aims to make club football in Africa self-sustaining.
The winner of the TotalEnergies CAF Confederations Cup gets USD 2 000 000.
Cairo, Egypt will host the opening of TotalEnergies Champions League action between former champions TP Mazembe, who will be hosted by Egypt’s Pyramids – a team that has shown promise in the CAF Interclub competition but has yet to seal its name among the reigning champions African Football Powers.
The match will be played at 18:00 local time (16:00 GMT).
Next up will be Algeria’s CR Belouizdad hosting Tanzania’s Young Africans – last season’s TotalEnergies CAF Confederations Cup runners-up.
TotalEnergies CAF Champions League defending champions Al Ahli will be at home to Medeama as they look to claim their record 12u trophy.
Completing the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League action will be African Football (AFL) Champions Mamelodi Sundowns who will be at home to this season’s surprise package FC Nouadhibou of Mauritania. The Club from Nouadhibou – the coastal city in Mauritania is an unknown entity to many, but they have pulled off some famous results, including their 3-0 win against Real Bamako in the qualifiers for this competition.
In the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup, defending champions USM Alger of Algeria host Al Hilal Benghazi of Libya on Sunday. Al Hilal Benghazi have shown huge improvement in continental football in recent seasons.
In Nigeria, Rivers United who are the only Nigerian flag bearers in this season’s CAF inter-club competition host Angola’s Academia do Lobito
