Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has called on the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) to leverage the link between the Ghana Card and the Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) to strengthen the identification and tax collection process for individuals and businesses.
Dr Bawumia described the current GRA approach as “lazy”, focusing only on existing taxpayers, and stressed the need for more effective strategies to target those who are not yet tax compliant did.
Speaking at the 57th Congregation of KNUST on Friday, November 24, the Vice President said, “By linking the Ghana Card number and TIN number, the GRA will know who has filed their taxes and who has not. “So that’s a wealth of data.” We are asking GRA to use that data because it is available to us. ”
He added: “It’s very lazy to keep looking for taxes from people who are already paying taxes when you can see that the vast majority of people are not paying taxes. They are the ones that the GRA They should be the people who should.” If you focus on that, you’ll get more tax dollars from the majority. ”
Dr Bawumia also advised the GRA to consider introducing a new taxpayer-based bonus scheme for GRA staff to introduce into the scheme.
The Vice President further announced that the government will introduce a new system under which every child born in Ghana will be issued a Ghana Card number from December 2023.
Dr Bawumia also said that from next year, a credit scoring system based on the Ghana Card will be introduced, giving lower interest rates and increased access to loans to those who are diligent in their loan repayments.
