Dr Afoko expressed concern about the prevalence of bladder and kidney cancer in the community, noting in particular the alarming young age at which people are diagnosed with terminal cancer.
These cancers usually occur in people between the ages of 60 and 70, but in some areas they are reaching late stages as young as 20 years old, making surgery ineffective.
Additionally, the region has a high incidence of kidney stones, affecting all age groups, including cases of children as young as seven months old with kidney stones.

The expanded facility aims to offer a wide range of specialty medical services, including urology and surgical interventions. Dr. Afoko emphasizes efforts to improve access and quality of healthcare for all segments of the population. From treating common illnesses such as malaria to performing complex surgeries such as laparoscopic surgery, the center is equipped to meet a variety of medical needs.
“From treating simple malaria to performing complex surgeries, including laparoscopic surgery. So we also perform basic and complex surgeries,” he said.
Laparoscopic surgery:
A notable feature of this center is its ability to perform laparoscopic surgery, a minimally invasive procedure that allows surgeons to access the abdomen without making large incisions. Dr. Afoko emphasizes that this advanced surgical technique is not commonly practiced in other parts of Ghana. Laparoscopy is commonly used in gynecology, gastroenterology, and urology for the diagnosis and treatment of various conditions affecting the reproductive, digestive, and urinary systems.

Laparoscopy is performed under general anesthesia, so you won’t feel any pain during the procedure. The surgeon will begin by making one or more small incisions in your abdomen. These incisions serve as entry points for a laparoscope, small surgical instruments, and tubes designed to pump gas into the abdomen. The introduction of gas improves the surgeon’s visibility during examinations and surgical procedures.

After the laparoscopy is complete, gas is released from the abdomen and the incisions are closed with sutures. A bandage will be applied to aid the healing process. In many cases, patients can go home the same day, but an overnight stay may be recommended for follow-up and post-operative care.
Patient care and community impact:
Dr. Afoko emphasizes the importance of adopting a healthy lifestyle, including staying hydrated, eating well, and being physically active. The center aims to prioritize patient care, and in some cases it can take at least 24 hours for symptoms to improve before being discharged.
