The Gbesile Circuit Court has granted bail in the sum of GHS 200,000 to Assistant Superintendent of Police Nasir Amadu and Emmanuel Minta, No. 51836G/CPL No. 51836, with three sureties, on charges of illegal possession of drugs for the purpose of trafficking. Admitted.
The case was adjourned until December 20, 2023, for them to return to court.
The court, presided over by Mrs Eleanor Kakra Baines-Botchway, said the bail application was taken into account as the men were police officers and well known in the community.
Assistant Superintendent of Public Prosecution (ASP) Ernest Kuofi said the complainant was a police officer in Afienya district.
The accused, Amadou (48 years old), currently works as a second-in-command at the Sakumono District Police Headquarters, along with Minta.
He said Minta, 43, was working for him as a service driver at the police station on November 19. The complainant was carrying out a snap-check operation when police received information that a Nissan Navara with registration number GP727 was loaded with drugs. Ho towards Accra.
ASP Kuoffi said that at around 19:15 on the same day, the accused stopped their vehicle at a checkpoint, where they were intercepted. A search of the vehicle revealed eight bags containing 541 compressed parcels of suspected narcotics.
Prosecutors said the investigation revealed that Minta had a family connection to Orman, a resident of Ashaiman Turak, who was involved in drug dealing.
According to prosecutors, on November 19, Minta was contacted by Olman to help him transport a large quantity of Indian cannabis from Pekitib in the Volta Region to Turak for a fee. Minta then contacted Amadou about the deal, and also contacted the aforementioned Orman to agree to terms of engagement.
He said that after signing the contract with Olman, the defendants drove GP 727 from Sakumono to the forest around Pekitibu, where they picked up the exhibits from a waiting Mercedes bus.
Prosecutors said the suspect was in the process of transporting illegal drugs when police received information and arrested him.
The incident on November 19, 2023 was found to be the second time that the defendants were involved in such illegal activities.
The exhibits are being examined by the Forensic Crime Laboratory, but no test report has been submitted yet.
