The Ghana Health Service launched its maiden awards program dubbed the Ghana Health Service Excellence Awards last night in Accra. The awards programme, in the words of the Director General of the Service, Dr Patrick Kuma-Aboagye is “an integral part of our staff welfare and performance management system, designed to recognize and celebrate outstanding performance both at individual and institutional levels ». The awards sought to instill patriotism and professionalism among dedicated health workers, as well as promote a culture of achievement and retain health professionals in underserved areas.
The Director General noted that the awards program, in addition to enhancing customer care and promoting patient satisfaction, also aligns with the principles of the Network of Practice, a GHS flagship program that strives to maximize performance in pursuit of Universal Coverage health. He revealed that the awards program became urgent in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, where health workers emerged as unsung heroes with their unwavering commitment and resilience despite difficult circumstances. Dr Kuma-Aboagye explained that the awards were structured into three levels: Regional, Regional and National, where regional and regional level winners respectively moved on to compete at the national level for the grand prizes. He revealed that a total of 1779 awards were distributed at the district, regional and national levels, which covered all levels of health care as well as all categories of health personnel. The ceremony was attended by dignitaries such as the Deputy Minister of Health, Hon. Tina Mensah, and the First Lady of the Republic of Ghana, Her Excellency Mrs Rebecca Akufo-Addo who was the special guest of honour.
The First Lady commended healthcare workers for their commitment and dedication especially throughout the Covid 19 period and reiterated the need for their hard work to be recognized and their efforts recognized through the awards programme.A total of 66 facilities and individuals were awarded at the event. The awards included 18 General Staff Awards, 14 Leadership Excellence Awards, 18 Institutional Awards, 15 Special Awards dedicated to development partners and organizations that have contributed to healthcare delivery in the country and 1 General National Award.
The ceremony concluded with Ms. Egbeegbe Anagbonu, Senior Midwifery Officer at Tokurano Health Center in Krachi East District of Oti District emerging as the best overall worker for the year 2023.
