The United Nations has selected Accra as the venue for the next UN peacekeeping ministerial conference, marking the first time the conference will be held on the African continent.
Defense Minister Dominic Nitiulu shared details at a press conference on Sunday, December 3, and emphasized the importance of this global conference, which will be held on December 5 and 6.
“The decision to relocate the United Nations Peacekeeping Ministerial Conference to Accra is evidence of Ghana’s growing role in international peacekeeping operations,” Minister Nitiulu said.
Ghana currently chairs the United Nations Special Committee on Peacekeeping, which will welcome foreign ministers, defense ministers, heads of international organizations, academia, social partners, civil society organizations and journalists from around the world.
Mr. Nitiulu said the conference was a pivotal event for the United Nations, second only to the annual general meeting in New York.
The conference, which is expected to be attended by 80 to 100 Member States and more than 600 registered delegates, will focus on the role of women in peacekeeping, protection of civilians, mental health of peacekeepers, safety and security, and strategic communication. “As a country that has exceeded United Nations targets on women’s participation in peacekeeping operations, Ghana is proud to initiate further discussion on this important issue,” Minister Nitiulu stressed.
The two-day event will begin with a welcome reception at the Accra International Conference Center, followed by side meetings on “Women in Peacekeeping Operations” and “Environmental Aspects of Peacekeeping” in collaboration with Sweden and the United States, respectively.
