Ghana lost to Comoros 1-0 in one of many shock results in their 2026 World Cup qualifiers on Tuesday.
French-born Myziane Maolida scored just before half-time in the archipelago capital Moroni and Comoros held off the Black Stars’ last-gasp upset. Comoros now lead African qualifying Group I.
Senegal and Cameroon settled for draws. Sadio Mane and Senegal were held to a 0-0 draw in Togo. Cameroon drew 1-1 in Libya.
Rwanda handed South Africa a shock 2-0 defeat in difficult conditions. The hosts adapted better to the waterlogged pitch of Huye Stadium.
Innocent Nsuti held off a defender and slotted into the far corner to open the scoring in the 12th minute. Gilbert Mugisha then took advantage of a defensive mix-up in the penalty area to double the lead after 28 minutes.
Lesotho were held to a 0-0 draw by Benin in South Africa in the other Group C game, leaving Rwanda top of the group with four points from two games. South Africa are second on three points with Lesotho, Nigeria and Zimbabwe on two points and Benin last on one.
Hakim Zigeh scored for Morocco, who also benefited from an own goal, to record a 2-0 win in Tanzania. It was the first game of the 2022 World Cup semi-final qualifiers after the Atlas Lions’ first match was canceled due to Eritrea’s withdrawal from the tournament. Niger beat Zambia 2-1 in Morocco.
In other matches, Tunisia won 1-0 in Malawi, Botswana beat Guinea 1-0 at home, Burkina Faso beat hosts Ethiopia 3-0 in Morocco and Uganda beat Somalia 1-0 also in Morocco.
Mauritius and Angola were held to a 0-0 draw, as were South Sudan and Mauritania.
Eswatini lost their home game to Cape Verde 2-0 in South Africa, while Namibia beat hosts Sao Tome and Principe 2-0 in Morocco.
Nine teams from Africa will qualify directly for the 48-team World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada. A 10th ranked team could make the playoffs.
