The National Communications Authority (NCA) has warned against the sale of Elon Musk’s Starlink internet services to Ghana.
In a statementthe NCA said Starlink’s operations were illegal.

The Authority said it has neither licensed Starlink nor approved any equipment for use in Ghana.
Starlink’s technology delivers high-speed, low-latency broadband via satellites in orbit.
Starlink’s satellite broadband service is available on all seven continents, including Antarctica.
In Africa, Starlink operates in Mozambique, Nigeria and Rwanda. The company has plans to launch in Egypt, Senegal, Benin, Togo, Kenya and Tanzania soon.

According to Starlink websitethe service is expected to launch in Ghana in the third quarter of 2024.
Commencement of operations in Ghana is subject to government regulatory approval.

The NCA’s warning came after concerns over Ghana’s internet data costs.
MTN Ghana has increased the prices of its product offers from November 28, 2023.
The telco said the price hike was due to increased operating costs.
Surfline Ghana departs from Ghana
Surfline Ghana ceased operations in Ghana in early 2023.
Prior to his departure, YEN.com.gh reported that Surfline was shut down by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) for unpaid taxes amounting to GH₵37 million.
This amount consists of unpaid wages for employees, communication service tax and fines from 2015.
The GRA said the office was closed because there was no commitment from the company to pay.

YEN.com.gh previously reported that the Electricity Company of Ghana Limited (ECG) has announced its intentions to use a fiber optic backbone to undertake the provision of data and broadband services.
It has also planned to position itself as a regulator for the renewable energy sector in Ghana.
ECG said these were part of plans to become a key player in the energy sector.
