Residents of the North West region have expressed their dissatisfaction with the government’s failure to develop the region to National Democratic Congress flag bearer John Mahama during a construction tour of Ghana.
In communities including areas such as Bodi, Sefi, Essam and Deviso, local residents highlighted poor road conditions, deforestation and the challenges of cocoa cultivation as critical issues affecting their lives.
The NDC led the flag bearer and concluded the tour of the North West region by holding several town hall meetings where residents shared and elaborated on their challenges.
Many people are concerned not only about the poor condition of the town’s roads, but also about the aging roads that connect it to other areas.
“When Mahama was in power, the forests were dense and dark. Now, when you pass through, it looks bright because there are no people. Our roads are in a terrible state. Schools are closed because of these inadequate roads. Two months ago, the petrol supply ran dry just because of the road conditions,” one resident said.
“Our communities have valuable resources such as cocoa and timber, but equally poor roads make it difficult to transport goods, causing untold suffering.” another person said.
“Everything has collapsed since the NPP came to power in 2017,” one added.
The majority of the inhabitants of the northwestern region are farmers, primarily engaged in cocoa cultivation. However, they claim that this profession has collapsed due to the high cost of fertilizers and other agricultural inputs.
“The development here is not good. Look at the level of development, even though there is money today. It is not going well,” said one farmer. “When we bring issues like schools, roads, water, etc. to the District Chief Executive (DCE), the DCE says they’re going to work on it, but they don’t.
“I have animals. Animal medicine used to be very cheap, but now I can’t buy it,” said another resident. “When Mahama comes, he will help those of us who are uneducated to acquire handicrafts.”
Former President John Mahama reassured residents that if voted into power, the government would take steps to address their concerns.
“Public Broadcasting Corporation (PBC) began in the era of Kwame Nkrumah and continued to function and operate profitably during my tenure. But today, PBC It collapsed due to the actions of those who tried to destroy it.”
“Currently, they are all aiming to secure their seats in Parliament. The NPP is also striving to secure their seats in Parliament,” the former president stressed.
