The New Patriotic Party (NPP) says it will know in advance by Friday, December 29, how many MPs will not seek re-election.
The list of NPP members resigning from parliament is growing, including a significant number considered to be stalwarts of both party and national politics. Many political watchers believe this development is particularly unhealthy for the fate of nuclear power plants in the 2024 general election.
However, NPP Deputy General Secretary Haruna Mohammed says the NPP has a large number of experienced but capable people to take over from retired members.
Majority Leader Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, First Vice-Chairman Joe Osei-Usu and former cabinet ministers, Joe Gharty (Railway, former Attorney-General and Attorney-General), Samuel Attah Akuiya (Construction and Housing); Dan Botwe (Local Government and Rural Development) and Kwasi Amoako-Atta (Roads and Highways) are among the key NPP figures who have decided to leave the House of Commons.

Haruna Mohammed told Joy News over the phone that mentoring leaders is typical of the NPP and there are enough people being mentored to take over. Therefore, there is no need to worry.
“…by tomorrow we will receive a formal report on the absentees. However, the New Patriotic Party has always placed itself in an advantageous position in terms of parliamentary representation.
“We encourage the use of mentorship, and we strive to make sure we have the right people in certain positions. If you look at guys like Hackman Owusu Agyeman, guys like Papa Owusu Ankoma, you’re going to lose experienced personnel, but what do you have?, at the time. You can see when Congress was very interesting that they were able to bring up a new person in the form of the current majority leader who was in that Congress. But you see a lot more from him. , you are looking at Afenyo Malkin, Habib Idris. So the new incoming politicians or parliamentarians or representatives of nuclear power plants will always contribute their slots and as you mention has contributed to the departure of these experienced people. We believe we will gain more experienced people…”
