Earlier this week, Rory McIlroy joined the English podcast Stick to football and discussed a wide variety of topics. One of these was of course LIV Golf and its disdain for the opposing course. Besides, that disdain seems to have passed as McIlroy reversed.
Thursday, Greg Norman he responded in the four-time major champion’s remarks on the LIV Golf Podcast.
“I have to be honest with you – I really appreciate what Rory said. It’s been a painful two years,” said Norman.
“The reason I say I appreciate Rory falling on his own sword to some extent is the fact that he judged us without knowing the facts. He judged us based on other people’s thoughts and opinions… I say ‘thanks Rory’. This is an important turning point for everyone.”
Norman has been outspoken for a long time, believing in LIV and what it can do for the sport. He has warned that the Saudi-sponsored golf tour was going nowhere.
While McIlroy, PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan and others addressed the end of the rival tour, Norman was steadfast in his belief.
The Aussie legend isn’t the only one who appreciates McIlroy’s comments.
Late Wednesday night, Phil Mickelson took to Twitter, his favorite platform. He also took the high road with a positive message for golf fans and players alike, hoping for a united future for the sport.
Even Brooks Koepka and his wife, Jenna Sims, took a different approach.
The deadline between the PGA Tour and Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) to strike a deal has passed as the calendar reaches 2024. However, talks continue and there is still a chance something can be worked out.
But even if the two sides come to an agreement, one thing’s for sure, LIV Golf isn’t going anywhere.
