Mo Salah almost missed another penalty after hitting the crossbar and leaning on the ball to rebound off the back of the keeper and into the back of the net.
The Liverpool superstar has been linked with Egypt’s national team for the Africa Cup of Nations, which kicks off next weekend.
Egypt – who reached the final of the continental competition last time out – faced Tanzania in a friendly on Sunday night to help their preparations.
Egypt beat Tanzania 2-0 in their final warm-up match before their opening clash with Ivory Coast next weekend. However, it was not Salah’s best performance.
Salah started the game well, feeding the ball to Mahmoud ‘Trezeguet’ Hassan for Egypt’s opening goal in the 33rd minute of the match.
He helped Egypt dominate possession but failed to create much going forward. However, his moment to shine came when Egypt were awarded a penalty.
Salah then stepped up to strike after Omar Marmoos fell in the penalty area in the 71st minute of the match.
The Egypt international was looking to make a statement after coming under fire for his form in the penalty shootout at Liverpool, but struggled to hit the target.
He took a long line and looked to drop the ball into the top right corner. However, he couldn’t keep it down.
As a result, the ball went over the crossbar and looked set to go down as yet another miss on Salah’s penalty shootout record.
However, luckily for the Egypt international, the ball hit the backside of the keeper (who had dived to tackle) and bounced into the net.
Salah looked relieved but a little embarrassed about how the goal came. Nevertheless, Egypt celebrated their second goal.
Salah’s place as Liverpool’s undisputed penalty taker came under threat after his penalty miss against Newcastle on Monday night.
Salah had a chance to break the deadlock when Luis Diaz went down in the box. However, his shot was saved by Martin Dubravka.
Salah made amends by scoring a second try later in the game. However, this did not convince fans – who took to social media to criticize him.
They highlighted the fact that Salah had missed Arsenal in April during the 2-2 draw and how Neto denied him in March during the 1-0 defeat by Bournemouth.
