Morocco, one of the hot favorites at the Africa Cup of Nations, will kick off their campaign on Wednesday evening as they take on Tanzania at the Stade de San Pedro. They are overwhelming favorites with the bookies at 1/4 odds Betfred while Tanzania are 10/1 outsiders to cause a shock and a draw is 7/2.
Despite a relatively disappointing record at the continental competition, Morocco have raised the bar for African football at the 2022 World Cup. However, their journey has been met with reality checks, including a goalless draw against Cape Verde and a 2-1 loss to South Africa in the AFCON qualifiers. A wake-up call came after Ivory Coast’s 1-1 draw.
Head coach Walid Regragui acknowledged that they were not considered favorites to win the AFCON after these results. However, Morocco responded strongly by winning their next matches against Liberia (3-0), Tanzania (2-0) and Sierra Leone (3-1) last week.
With an impressive line-up on paper, Morocco enter the tournament with high expectations. Having only lifted the AFCON trophy once in 1976, they will face immense pressure to make a statement against a favored opponent in their opening game on Wednesday evening.
