Deputy Transport Minister Alhassan Tampuri Slemana said commercial road transport operators have no reason to increase transport fares.
He said there was no reason for freight rates to increase as there would be no increase in products such as spare parts or lubricants.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Thursday, January 18, he said: [for any increase] now.
“So, normally you would say that these are considered in the public’s interest so that it doesn’t look like they’re unnecessarily burdening the public, so there has to be some basis. ”
“We have to build on the foundation that the price of petroleum products is going up and the price of spear parts is going up as well.”
His comments followed a press release by Ghana’s commercial transport operator announcing a 30% increase in transport fares across the country from Monday, January 22nd.
The operator justified this decision by citing significant increases in lubricants, spare parts and DVLA service charges.
However, the Deputy Minister said that although he was not aware of the union, the price of petroleum products had fallen since the last price increase.
He stressed that even if fares were raised in anticipation of the tax increase, unions would have to wait until the tax increase is implemented.
Meanwhile, Slemana said he plans to meet with unions to discuss taxes and find a way forward.
“We need to have a conversation to look at these taxes and how they have affected truck fares. We need to put all the variables in a basket and see if it goes beyond a certain trench hold. There is a formula that will automatically trigger if
“We have not yet had such discussions, so a unilateral decision would be contrary to the procedures we have established to date,” he added.
