Ghana have sacked coach Chris Hughton following their group stage exit from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
The Black Stars finished with two points in Group B, drawing 2-2 with Egypt and Mozambique trailing 2-1 loss to Cape Verde in their opener.
Ghana had long-held hopes of qualifying as one of the four best-ranked third-placed teams but were knocked out on Tuesday when the results went against the grain.
Hughton had been appointed as Ghana’s coach in February of last year.
“Chris Hughton has been relieved of his duties with immediate effect,” a Ghana Football Association (GFA) the statement said., external
“The executive board also took a decision to disband the Black Stars technical team.
“The GFA will in the coming days provide a road map for the future direction of the Black Stars.”
Former Newcastle United and Brighton manager Hughton began working as a technical adviser for the four-time continental champions in February 2022.
He replaced Otto Addo as boss after Addo stepped down following the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where Ghana finished bottom of Group H with one win from three matches.
Ghana also crashed out of the 2021 Afcon finals in Cameroon at the group stage and the West Africans suffered the same fate in Ivory Coast.
GFA said so was “100%” behind Hughton after a fan had a “verbal altercation” with the manager after the shock defeat to Cape Verde.
The 65-year-old looked set to guide the Black Stars into the round of 16, with Ghana second in Group B while leading 2-0 over Mozambique in their final group game.
However, the Mambas scored twice in second-half stoppage time to achieve an unlikely draw which finally sent the Ghanaians home.
The West Africans have also had a mixed start to their 2026 World Cup qualifiers under Hughton, beating Madagascar with a late goal before losing 1-0 to Comoros.
