Private lawyer and human rights activist Martín Kupebu has clarified that Benjamin Agorzo, a former assistant commissioner of police (ACP), had no knowledge of the coup plot.

Kpebu said ACP Agorzo’s references to the Arab Spring and Ghana’s economic situation were not intended to encourage illegal activities.
“We voted for President Akufo-Addo in 2016 because he preached the Arab Spring. How did this young man emulate him when it started in Tunisia? “You said they didn’t have a job, right? So they didn’t have a job and couldn’t make a living to pay their bills,” he said.
Kupeb explained that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) also brought up the idea of the Arab Spring to gain support in the 2016 elections.
“I see Mr. Akufo-Addo sitting on Peace FM talking about the Arab Spring because the current government cannot provide jobs for the youth. So vote for me. That’s why I voted.”
“Akufo-Addo preached the Arab Spring and that is the message we all accepted. We all thought Mahama was so corrupt that you would come and set us right. That is why we voted for you. When you come out, you will turn out to be more corrupt than Mahama.”
The lawyer stressed that Mr. Agordozo was vindicated because he has the right to freedom of expression and freedom of assembly.
Six people allegedly involved in the coup plot were found guilty of conspiracy to commit high treason and high treason.
However, Deputy Police Commissioner Benjamin Agorzo, Colonel Gameli, and another junior officer, Corporal Seydou Abubakar, were acquitted.
The charges date back to April 24, 2021, and involve Citadel Hospital’s late CEO Dr. Frederick Yao McPalm, ACP Dr. Agorzo, and eight others.
The defendants were charged with various crimes, including conspiracy to commit high treason, abetting high treason, and high treason.
