The investigation into the assault by Yendi MP Farouk Aliu Mahama on Citi FM’s Northern Regional Correspondent Mohammed Aminu M. Alabila has been taken over by the Northern Regional Police Command.
The incident took place during the New Patriotic Party parliamentary primaries in Yendi constituency, when Allu Mahama and his team reportedly attacked media personnel who were covering the chaos that broke out during the counting process. That’s what it means.
Mr Alavila detailed that he had submitted an official report to the Yendi Regional Police Command, providing live reporting and giving MPs the opportunity to share their views on the violence.
But instead of engaging in dialogue, Aravila claims he was slapped by the deputy, and his associates further assaulted him, confiscating his cellphone in the process.
In an interview with City News, Aravila said that although he was not physically injured, the incident has left him with sleepless nights.
“Physically, I’m not hurt. But for the last two days, I don’t know if I’m thinking too much or something, but I couldn’t sleep,” Aravila said.
Meanwhile, in response to a question on the party’s position on the issue, party general secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong said the party was yet to receive an official report on the assault.
The investigation by the Northern Regional Police Command signals a shift in powers to ensure a thorough and impartial investigation into incidents involving MPs and journalists.
