Marcus Rashford was in Erik ten Hag’s bad books last week after a late-night drinking session in Belfast with the Manchester United star now appearing in an advert for an alcohol-promoting program
Marcus Rashford has been pictured promoting alcohol at the Manchester United fixture – just a week after a late night drinking session landed him in hot water.
The forward was absent for last Sunday’s FA Cup win over Newport County with Erik ten Haag citing an “internal matter”. Rashford was photographed in a Belfast nightclub and then missed training the next day, claiming to be ill.
Ten Haag has since revealed he believes the matter is closed after speaking to Rashford and his representatives. The England international landed a huge fine, but that made his appearance on the show all the more embarrassing. He posed alongside female star Mary Earps to promote Chivas Regal – the whiskey brand.
The United boss said of the player’s responsibilities: “Players at this level have to manage themselves. This is what you can demand from the player. The player must know what is good and what is not. When you want to play top football, it requires a certain lifestyle. Always.”
It’s not the first time Rashford has been in his manager’s bad books this season. He headed to a nightclub to celebrate his birthday earlier this season after being beaten 3-0 in the Manchester derby just hours earlier. Ten Haag claimed his actions were “unacceptable”.
Rashford, after a season in which he broke the 30-goal mark for the first time, is struggling to reach those heights again in a United side that has regressed. His body language on the pitch has been criticized with Rashford previously dipping in and out of form throughout his career.
The 26-year-old responded positively when he returned to the team against Wolves on Thursday night, scoring early in the 4-3 win. He then failed to score as United held off West Ham.
Gary Neville has admitted he was concerned about the United forward’s behaviour. He told the Stick to Football podcast: “I’m a bit worried [about Marcus Rashford ]. I think when somebody who’s been so quiet and peaceful for the last seven or eight years – almost in a way perfect for 10 years in terms of his behavior – and then the last four months, a couple of things happened.
“I’m always thinking, ‘Is she okay?’ “What’s wrong with him?” He’s either struggling or he thought, “I don’t give an af**k.” It’s one of those two things and I don’t think it’s this one [the latter]but it gets a lot of attention.”
