As part of efforts to eliminate ghost names from the public sector, Ghana’s Comptroller-General and Treasurer-General, Mr. Kwasi Kwanin Bosompem, has issued a strong warning to workers who have not linked their Ghana Cards to the payroll system.
Speaking at the Auditor General’s Annual Conference in Kumasi, Kwaning Bosompem stressed the importance of innovative financial management practices to ensure reliable payroll systems.
The process of linking National Identification Authority (NIA) numbers to payroll databases began two years ago and its implementation is currently underway.
Mr Kwaning Bosongpem has clarified that those who do not have a Ghana Card will soon have their salaries cut off.
He also said that even if an individual’s NIA card is lost, its number will remain in the database and can be matched and verified through physical verification.
Also speaking at the meeting, COP’s Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) Director-General Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo-Danquah emphasized the importance of cooperative efforts to combat corruption.
He expressed concern over the stagnation of the Corruption Perceptions Index over the past four years and called for increased intervention to improve perceptions of corruption.
COP’s Mr. Addanka urged everyone to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity, stressing that the fight against corruption should not be left to institutions alone, but requires the participation of all citizens.
The meeting was attended by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei-Mensah, on behalf of Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia. Mr. Osei-Mensah commended the Auditor General’s Office for its great strides and emphasized the importance of technology and innovation in the accounting and finance sector.
This move by the Auditor General of Ghana reflects the country’s commitment to strengthening transparency and accountability in the public sector and is expected to have a positive impact on financial management practices in Ghana.
