National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate John Dramani Mahama has opposed the proposal to hold general elections in November 2024.
He explained that the proposed rescheduling of the general election is not feasible as the Election Commission is not prepared.
“We at the NDC do not support the proposal to change the date from December to November because we do not believe it is feasible or beneficial and we do not believe it is being proposed in good faith,” he said. Ta. Minority Caucus workshop held at the Volta Serene Hotel in Ho.
Mr Mahama is not listed on this year’s election calendar as of February 2024, and the fallout from the district level elections in December 2023 means that the committee will move to a constitutional exercise in November 2024 rather than December 2024. He explained that this shows that he is not ready for the current situation.
“It’s been more than a month since the election year began, but basic things like the activity schedule for the year have not yet been prepared by the election commission,” he lamented.
He called on the committee to organize the House of Commons to ensure credible, fair and transparent elections in December, as has been held since the inception of the Fourth Republic.
This, he said, would avoid unfortunate incidents such as shortages seen during district-level elections in December 2023.
Mr Mahama claimed that the move to reschedule the general election was part of a grand scheme being rolled out by the government to rig the election in favor of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
He said the ruling party was aware of Ghanaians’ calls for a change of government and was therefore adopting a strategy to “undermine the credibility of the elections”.
