In a crucial moment for the game, chess is set to feature among 23 sports at the 13th African Games, to be hosted by the Republic of Ghana from March 8 to 23, 2024.
The event will take place in the capital Accra, celebrating the spirit of unity and excellence across the African continent.
“The inclusion of chess in this prestigious multi-sport event is an important step in the international recognition of the game in major international sporting events,” said the FIDE president. Arkady Dvorkovich.
Chess made its debut at the African Games in 2003 and featured in all subsequent editions until 2015. The decision to include chess in the 13th edition was accepted by the Minister of Youth and Sports of the Republic of Ghana, reflecting the game’s status in global level.
“During my recent visit to Africa, I saw great appetite for the game and interest from the public and the African government. To have chess included in one of the biggest sporting events in Africa is great. It confirms chess’ place as a sport in major sporting events and is one step closer to chess’ presence at the Olympic Games as the world’s biggest sporting event,” said the Grandmaster. Nigel ShortFIDE Director of Chess Development.
The 13th African Games will feature 24 countries in the chess tournament, with each country eligible to enter a team of two chess players, consisting of one man, one woman and a captain.
Formats will include Rapid Mixed Team Championship, Men’s Rapid Championship, Women’s Rapid Championship, Mixed Team Blitz Championship, Men’s Blitz Championship and Women’s Blitz Championship.
The inclusion of chess at the African Games follows the success of the reintroduction of chess at the Asian Games, where individual and team tournaments were held in both the open and women’s categories.
The primary objective of the 13th African Games is to promote positive rivalry among the youth of Africa, projecting a united Africa to the world. Beyond athletics, the event aims to promote Africa’s rich art and culture, contributing to socio-economic development across the continent.
