Former Black Stars captains Stephen Appiah and Asamoah Gyan have been chastised by some protesters for not being available for the ‘Save Ghana Football’ rally on Wednesday, February 14, 2024.
Speaking to GhanaWeb, a protester called on respected Ghanaian footballers not to turn up, saying their presence would be decisive.
“Imagine if we had Asamoah Gyan. Where are all these old athletes? Stephen Appiah, the Ghanaian sports legend, where is he? Don’t they have the same problems with Ghanaian sports? Don’t they have problems with the technical team? At least they are supposed to they were here to speak and this will send a big message out there.”
He further argued that Ghana is suffering from a rotten system that has made every aspect of the country dysfunctional.
“Ghana as a country has a system breakdown and because of the system breakdown, it has affected every part of our government. Let’s talk about health, there is a problem. Let’s talk about football, there is a problem. Transport, education, employment, everything has fallen apart, and it is gradually worn down to the point where it will crash.
“Instead of coming together and fighting the system, everyone wants to do their own thing. So #FixTheCountry is doing their thing, and everyone will be left out. The point of this is ‘Fix Ghana Football’. It’s the Ghana football different from solving Ghana’s problems No. We need to rethink that,” he said.
The protest was in reaction to the terrible performance of the Black Stars at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. Thousands of Ghanaians showed up and walked the streets of Accra with their placards as they protested against the GFA and the government.
