In order to promote Ghanaian culture and prevent its extinction, Parliament is to begin using the local language in the chambers of the House of Commons.
Order 63 of the new Standing Orders provides that Members of Parliament (MPs) may use any local language, subject to interpretation and translation that is understandable to all.
It is expected to be in full swing during the second session of the fourth session of the 8th Congress.
National Assembly Speaker Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin said the necessary equipment, including interpreters and appropriate equipment, needed to be in place for a smooth takeoff.
Therefore, barring any problems, the new measures will come into effect after the Easter holidays.
statement, contribution
Yesterday, the issue of the use of local languages came up on the floor of Parliament when the Second Deputy Minority Leader Emmanuel Alma-Kofi Buah issued a statement calling for the promotion and preservation of the Nzema language.
Mr Bua, who is also the National Democratic Party MP for Elembele in the Western Region, said Nzema is one of the 11 local languages included in the curriculum at primary and high school levels and can be tested.
Unfortunately, it is a matter of concern that despite the high level of language development, interest in language teaching and learning in educational institutions has significantly waned.
This attracted donations from members who unanimously called for the use of local languages in basic schools to promote language and provide proper understanding of different subjects.
They said it should be possible to teach science subjects, including chemistry, in local languages, similar to the Asian Tigers.
direction
The Chairperson then directed that the statement be referred to the Committee on Education, Culture, Tourism and Finance for a decision.
This introduction is aimed at enabling the Ghana Education Authority to embrace the concept of using the language in basic schools and primary education to promote Ghana’s culture and tourism and take into account financial considerations.
recollection
Congress reconvened on February 6, 2024, introduced a daily roll call of members and the recitation of the National Pledge, and began implementing the new Standing Orders.
The new standing order replaces the old order, which has been in place since 2006.
The roll call recorded in Order 14 is intended to increase the reliability of the attendance list and dispel any doubts about who was present in the chamber, especially during critical voting periods.
The purpose of the new standing orders is also to instill discipline and promote a sense of duty among those who voted for members of parliament.
On the other hand, the recitation of the National Pledge aims to increase patriotism and love for the country.
He stated that an oral roll call does not invalidate the signing of attendance registers at the floor or committee level.
