Argentina’s Facundo Diaz Acosta won his first ATP Tour title on Sunday at the IEB+ Argentina Open, where he thrilled his home fans by defeating Carlos Alcaraz’s Nicolas Jarry in the final.
The 23-year-old became the fourth champion of the season for the first time, joining Jiri Lehecka, Alejandro Tabilo and Luciano Darderi. ATPTour.com caught up with Diaz Acosta, who will climb to a career-high No. 59 in the ATP Pepperstone Rankings, about his memorable moment.
What does winning your first ATP Tour title mean to you?
Very very happy. I didn’t expect that this week. I’ve been working really hard for this since I was a kid, so to win here at home is so emotional. I am very happy about it.
Could you take a moment to acknowledge some of the key figures in your life and career who have helped you reach this milestone?
My whole FAMILY. My team, I started with my team 10, 12 years ago, so it’s a long time [time]. And my family too, they always help me in every situation — in bad times, in good times. So I think my family and my team.
You’ve said you started playing tennis when you were three with your grandparents. What are your memories of those early days in the sport?
I started playing tennis with my grandparents and my parents. Amazing moments. My grandfather is not here anymore. My grandma was here today watching the game so it was so emotional for me and so, so, so good.
What about Rafael Nadal as a person and player made him your idol growing up?
I grew up watching every match, every Roland Garros. I hope he comes back to the Tour and I can play against him.
You’ve enjoyed a big rise over the past year. What was the key?
I think my mental part was the key. I started to be more consistent. My bad weeks weren’t as bad as they were years ago. So I think the mental part was the key.
What do you consider to be your biggest passion outside of tennis and can you tell us a little about it?
My biggest passion is being with my friends, going out with my friends.
What other hobbies do you enjoy?
I like to watch football. River Plate.
This is a milestone moment in your career. How will you celebrate this victory?
Dinner with my team and family. Nothing else because I have to travel to Rio tomorrow. Maybe after all the other tournaments!
