Kennedy Agyapong, Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin Central Constituency, has warned his fellow MPs about passing the anti-LGBTQ+ bill under consideration.
He argued that imprisoning a person who openly flaunts his homosexuality is not a wise idea as it could lead to attacks against such individuals in society and could be problematic.
Kennedy Agyapong argued that caution is needed in passing an anti-gay bill because it would supersede the constitutional provisions regarding homosexual activities.
“We have to be careful about anti-gay bills. What disgusts me is when someone openly flaunts that they’re gay, but honestly that doesn’t mean they go to jail. That doesn’t mean you should. Everyone has individual rights, but that doesn’t mean they have to trump the Constitution.
“What worries me is the moment when being gay is criminalized and someone is convicted of being gay…while people take the law into their own hands and torture such people… or kill them,” he said in a video shared by One Ghana. The TV was aired on his YouTube channel and was spotted by GhanaWeb.
Kennedy Agyapong argued that promoters of LGBTQ+ activism should be imprisoned, and that those found to be homosexual should not be imprisoned.
“Those who promote it should be jailed, not those who just flaunt it.”
