Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) John Dramani Mahama has come to the defense of DCOP Prince Gabriel Warb, who recently made comments about the role of police in election security during a panel discussion earlier this week.
The former president finds it strange that police were not involved in his remarks emphasizing the police’s sole responsibility for election security in the upcoming 2024 polls.
The Ghana Police Service, through a press release, labeled DCOP Waabu’s comments as “unfortunate” and “baseless”, insisting that they did not represent the official position of the security services. The statement reiterated the collaborative nature of election security as outlined in the National Election Security Architecture.
Following this development, Mr Mahama maintained that the internal disciplinary action against senior officers was unwarranted.
“If we have to have peaceful elections, we have to have neutral security agencies. Security agencies that are loyal to the state and not to other political parties.”
“That’s why I find it strange that there is a disconnect between what police authorities say about the role of the military in elections and the relationship between police authorities, and I think he made the right decision. The main responsibility for the elections lies with the Ghana Police Service.” he said.
He was speaking at an Ahmadiyya Muslim Mission event commemorating the 100th anniversary of Islamic revival in Ghana held in Gomoa Pomaze in the Central Region.
Mr. Mahama used this opportunity to advocate for justice to prevent electoral violence, citing the incident that occurred in the Ayawaso West Woogon constituency.
