Ghanaian media personality and broadcast journalist Afia Pokua (also known as Vim Reddy) has shared her experience of being sexually harassed on a bus.
Narrating his experience in a video on his social media platform, Vim Reddy said he was on a bus from Tema to Accra when he felt someone repeatedly touch his thigh. said.
“A long time ago, I was working at a newspaper, and on my way back from reporting that day, I took the bus back to the office to post an article.
“On the way, I noticed that someone was touching my thigh several times. I couldn’t do anything because it was crowded and dark,” she recalled.
She later realized that the driver’s colleague next to her had ejaculated all over her skirt. In her anger, she slapped the man and other passengers also hit him, she said.
However, she refused to report the incident to the police, fearing stigma and victim blaming.
“When someone got out, I pulled myself together and realized that the person next to me, the driver’s colleague, had ejaculated all over my skirt.
“I was so angry that my first instinct was to slap him. And when the other passengers in the car realized what he had done, they punched him and went to the police station. They told me to report it, but I refused,” she said. she said.
She said she was traumatized by the incident and learned that many women face similar experiences of sexual harassment and assault on public transport.
“I was very traumatized by the incident. It was the first time something like that had happened to me. Later on, I realized that many men do such things. They get on public transport and sit next to women and try to fondle them and molest them.”These women,” she said.
She advised young women to be aware of their surroundings and those around them, but also called on authorities and society to do more to end sexual violence.
Her testimony drew mixed reactions on social media, with many expressing sympathy, support and anger.
Some shared their own stories of sexual assault, highlighting the prevalence and severity of the problem.
