Members of Parliament (MPs) and some leaders of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) clashed with members of the Ghana Armed Forces on their way to the grounds of the National Cathedral.
This follows an earlier announcement by the government that the project would begin today, 6 March 2024.
During the 2021 mid-year budget review in Parliament on Thursday, July 29, 2021, the then Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, said the $100 million inter-denominational cathedral would be completed by the commissioning date. Ta.
However, tight security surrounded the cathedral, leading to clashes with MPs directly in front of the new Electoral Commission headquarters.

Both the Ghanaian police and military set up barricades and restricted access to the entrance to the National Cathedral grounds.
Amid this standoff, North Tongu Constituency Member of Parliament Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced the unfinished National Cathedral project in a symbolic gesture aimed at highlighting the government’s perceived failure to complete the project. He took the satirical stance of outsourcing the project.

In 2021, the Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, announced that government will commission the ongoing National Cathedral project on Wednesday, March 6, 2024.
The minister said the day, which marks Ghana’s 67th Independence Day, will be used to formally commission the country’s supremacy-sacred sites.
During the mid-year budget review, the Minister of Finance stated that “construction of the National Cathedral is progressing rapidly.”
“Once completed, the National Cathedral will provide a sacred space for the nation’s formal religious activities and symbolize the faith’s significant contribution to nation-building,” he added.
