Some of the running mates of the various presidential candidates in the NDC
The selection of a running mate plays an important role in any political party, as it not only shapes the election outcome but also reflects the party’s ideological direction.
Since the inception of the Fourth Republic, the NDC in particular has had the opportunity eight times to select a vice-presidential candidate to align with the presidential candidate in various elections.
On March 7, 2024, the party selected another deputy candidate to join its flag bearer, Mr. John Dramani Mahama, for the 2024 general elections.
The NDC, as a party, has agreed to renominate its 2020 vice presidential candidate, Professor Nana Jane Opoku Agyemang, to rejoin the former president.
Below is a summary of all NDC vice-presidential candidates and their post-election results trends. This compilation is now available through the Class FM 91.3 poster.
In 1992, the ticket of Jerry John Rawlings and Enkensen Alker gave victory to the National Democratic Congress.
In the 1996 election, Jerry John Rawlings chose academic Professor John Evans Attah Mills and the NDC won.
After his return to the NDC flag bearer position, the then Vice President John Evans Atta Mills selected Martin Amidu as his running mate in 2000. Unfortunately, the NDC lost that election.
In the run-up to the 2004 general elections, John Evans Atta Mills, in alliance with Mohammed Mumuni, contested against the NPP’s John Agyum Kufuor, but lost.
In 2008, John Evans Atta Mills nominated John Dramani Mahama as his running mate and the NDC won.
Unfortunately, after three years in office, the president passed away and the vice president became president.
John Dramani Mahama chose economist Kwasi Amissah Arthur as his running mate in 2012. That ticket gave victory to the NDC.
Aiming to retain the seat in 2016, John Mahama kept Amissah Arthur as his running mate, but unfortunately the NDC lost to Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of the NPP.
In a bid to make a comeback, John Dramani Mahama and the NDC have fielded the first female vice-presidential candidate in the history of the Fourth Republic to help the NDC win the 2020 elections. However, that ticket did not win the election.
The NDC standard-bearer has re-nominated an intelligent professor to join the party as it prepares for the 2024 general elections.
