South Dayi MP Rockson Etse Dafeamekpor says Ghana needs infrastructure like a national cathedral.
He said the country currently lacks a national spiritual center and building a cathedral would be a valuable project for the country.
talk joy newsMr Dafeamekpor expressed concern about the chosen location and funding for the project, suggesting that the government was not fully committed to completing the project.
“My position is that this idea is a good one, but the complaint people have is that we don’t need it because we’re in an economic collapse.
“We shouldn’t be doing it at this time, but if we have it and we have the funds to support it, it’s good to have it.
“Given the amount of money involved, we should have seen the structure completed, even if it was unfinished.”
Despite former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta’s promise that the National Cathedral would be completed by March 6, 2024, construction progress remains at a basic level.
Members of the National Democratic Congress, led by North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, attempted to symbolically commission the project.
Attempts by National Democratic Congress MPs to symbolically commission the installation at this location were met with resistance from security officials who cited instructions from higher authorities.
However, Mr Ablakwa made several demands.
“We demand full accountability for what happened to our $8,141,552. We demand that the National Cathedral Board of Trustees be dissolved without delay.
“We call on all prosecutorial bodies to immediately begin prosecuting all those who caused this significant financial loss to the state,” he said.
