The Ghana Prisons Service said the actions of two police officers who helped Chinese prisoner Wang Xiao escape from Nsawam Intermediate Prison did not reflect the agency’s standards.
The Service maintains that its officers receive thorough training and adhere to a code of professional conduct.
Two prison officers, Joseph Oteng and Sergeant Isaac Boateng Bonsu, were charged with conspiracy and aiding and abetting escape. They appeared in the Accra Circuit Court on these charges. After visiting the hospital, the officers reportedly told their superiors that a Toyota Vitz approached them and drove off with the prisoners inside.
However, footage from the hotel’s surveillance camera contradicted their account. Video footage showed officers taking the Chinese prisoner to a hotel room to meet his wife. The inmate and his wife reportedly escaped by climbing over the balcony of their room while officers waited in the hotel’s reception area.
The police officers maintain their innocence. The court, presided over by Mrs. Afia Owusua Appiah, granted bail in the amount of CHF100,000 each with two sureties for good cause.
They are scheduled to reappear in court on April 9, 2024. The prosecution, led by Chief Inspector General Wisdom Arowu, said the complainant was the third in command of Nusawam Medium Security Prison and the defendants were serving their sentences under his supervision.
in sighting news Interview with Sellom Adnoux City FM On Tuesday, Chief Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Bureau of Prisons, Superintendent Abdul Latif Adamu, said the incident was unfortunate.
He stressed that the military does not condone such behavior and that police officers are well-trained and guided by a professional code of conduct.
He added that the service will continue to educate and enlighten police officers on the need for professionalism in their duties.
“As I said, we have standards in our organization. We have training protocols and a code of conduct. It’s pretty unfortunate that something like this happened and that issues like this… Therefore, we can be certain that we are sanctioning workers who may act contrary to the organization’s code of conduct. Therefore, we do not wish to comment on this matter at this time. The case is still in court. , because I want to see what the outcome of the lawsuit is before I actually comment.”
“As the military always says, a certain amount of casualties is acceptable in any situation. Therefore, I believe that the actions exhibited by these two correctional officers are truly representative of the actions of correctional officers in general. I don’t think there are, because these prison officers are just two of the thousands of prison officers who act professionally and carry out their daily duties.
βYes, we will not tolerate it. We will frown upon it. But we can ensure that our police officers are professional and we can educate them so that they can be more professional in their work.β We will continue.β
