Major internet outages have been reported in several countries across Africa.
Outbreaks have been reported in countries such as South Africa, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Ghana and Burkina Faso.
The cause of the cable failure is not immediately clear.
“There appears to be a pattern in the timing of the outages, affecting from the north to the south of Africa,” said Cloudflare Radar, which provides information on internet connections.
Internet connectivity in Ivory Coast was down to just 4 percent on Thursday morning, according to Netblocks, which monitors cyber security and internet connectivity.
Liberia at one point fell to 17 percent, while Benin was at 14 percent and Ghana at 25 percent, Netblocks said.
In South Africa, Vodacom said “customers are currently experiencing intermittent connectivity issues due to multiple undersea cable failures”.
A fault has also been reported on the MainOne cable system serving Nigeria’s commercial hub, Lagos.
The Liberian government said an internet outage had been reported since Thursday morning.
Citizens cannot access basic internet as well as social media in the vast majority of the country. International bank transfers are also reported to be affected, while international voice calls are limited.
“It seems like 50% of my life is gone today,” Benjamin Garkpah told the BBC from the Liberian capital, Monrovia.
Fatumata Barry said her business had stopped because she cannot receive mobile money payments.
The Telecommunications Authority of Liberia said it was caused by an incident involving the Africa Coast to Europe (ACE) undersea communication cable in Ivory Coast.
In Ghana, the National Communications Authority (NCA) said multiple undersea cable breaks were responsible for the outage.
Cloudflare posted on social media that major internet outages continue in Gambia, Guinea, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Benin and Niger.
