The Ghana Education Service (GES) has directed principals of junior and senior high schools to keep schools open and ensure the safety of students, despite an ongoing strike by three teachers’ unions.
Three teachers unions including the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Confederation of Concerned Teachers (CCT) launched a strike on Wednesday, March 20, 2024.
Affected trade unions have indicated that they are taking action against the government’s inaction in addressing working conditions.
However, GES said in a statement that principals have instructed regional and district directors to keep schools open and closely supervise all children reporting to school until further direction from GES management. It was pointed out that
GES also called on parents to remain calm.

The management of the Ghana Education Service (GES) has read from the media that three teacher unions in the tertiary education sector have declared the discontinuance of their services effective Wednesday, March 20, 2024.
Principals of public kindergartens, elementary schools, middle schools, and high schools are directed through local and district directors to mobilize their administrative teams to ensure the safety and well-being of all students in their schools.
Meanwhile, parents are advised to remain calm and rest assured that management are closely monitoring the situation and will advise on the way forward accordingly.
Regional and district heads are further directed to ensure that heads keep schools open and closely supervise all children reporting to schools until further instructions from GES management. .
