Kwesi Nyantakyi, former president of the Ghana Football Association
As preparations are underway for the Ejisu constituency by-election following the passing of the late MP John Ampontua Kuma, speculation is rife over the possible candidacy of former Ghana Football Association president Kwesi Nyantakyi.
Kwesi Nyantakyi has emerged as a strong candidate for the upcoming by-election, but is sensitive to the grieving process within the constituency following the recent loss of the late Deputy Finance Minister.
CityNewsroom.com reports that in an interview at the launch of the New Patriotic Party Ashanti Regional Campaign Team in Kumasi, Kwesi Nyantakyi subtly hinted that he would participate in the Ejisu by-election once the official date is announced.
Nyantakyi acknowledged the late MP’s current period of mourning, while affirming his ties to the constituency and eligibility to run.
“The Ejisu by-election will definitely take place, but the date has not been announced yet so we don’t know who will stand. I am from there and have the right to contest at the appropriate time, so Let’s see what happens. But right now we are mourning the death of a precious son of the constituency. The MP is a great loss to the constituency and we will see what happens in a week’s time. Let’s see,” he said.
Mr Kwesi Nyantakyi also appealed for confidence in the party’s standard bearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, in selecting the vice presidential candidate.
“I think it’s the standard bearer’s prerogative to choose his co-accompanying runner, so let’s leave it to him. At the right time, he will do it,” he said.
John Kuma, who until his death was a Member of Parliament for Ejisu, passed away on March 7, 2024 at the Suhum Government Hospital.
He reportedly passed away after a short illness.
John Kuma was also Deputy Minister of Finance.
Following formal notification to the Ghana Electoral Commission, the process to hold a by-election in Ejisu to replace the late member will begin.
