The National Labor Commission (NLC) has obtained an injunction restraining the teachers’ union from continuing its strike.
The NLC has sued the teachers union at the Accra High Court in connection with industrial action after efforts to get the union to resume work failed.
In its judgment on Thursday, March 28, the court said, “Respondents, whether individually or with their officers, officers, members, agents, employees, or others, are not authorized to strike on March 20, 2024. He is ordered to refrain from further continuation of his actions.” ”
The three teachers’ unions have declared a nationwide strike starting Wednesday, March 20, 2024.
The unions are the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Concerned Teachers Coalition (CCT).
This came after they accused the government of failing to address the terms of service.
They raised concerns about the continued garnishment of teachers’ salaries, unilateral changes to timetables without consulting the union, and delays in distributing laptops to teachers. .
Speaking to the media while announcing the strike, GNAT National Chairman, Mr. Isaac Owusu, said: “The distribution of laptops to all teachers is a matter of concern. Changes in school schedules are rampant without resorting to negotiations with teachers’ unions, affecting the smooth running of schools. It is also of great concern that government offices are withholding teachers’ salaries without resorting to established procedures.
“Given the circumstances described above, and in view of delays and unfulfilled promises on the part of employers and the Fair Wages and Payroll Commission, as well as intimidation from members of the public, we, the Higher Education Teachers Union, would like to announce that “And to press our demands, we hereby declare nationwide industrial action with effect from today, Wednesday 20th March 2024,” he said.
The NLC ordered the reversal of the decision in a statement signed and released by its chairperson, Justice Kwabena Usman-Addo, on Thursday, but the NLC did not comply, leading to the lawsuit.
“According to Article 133(1) of the Labor Act 2003, Law No. 651 of 2003 issued on Wednesday 20th March 2024 to GNAT, NAGRAT and CCT and published on various media networks in the country I have ordered the cancellation of the decision to declare a national strike.
