A minority in Parliament has called for health facilities to be spared from continued unplanned electricity load shedding by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
We also facilitate assessments to assess the capacity and reliability of hospital backup power systems.
In a press release signed by Ranking Member of the Health Committee, Kwabena Minta Akandoh, the minority emphasized the urgency of this request, stating that lives could be lost if swift action is not taken. It emphasizes that.
The statement also calls on the Ghana Health Service to consider alternative power sources for health facilities where exemption from ECG load shedding is not possible.
“The Department of Energy, in cooperation with relevant agencies, must exempt all healthcare facilities nationwide from the current unannounced and unscheduled power outages and power outages without delay.”
“The Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the Ghana Health Service, should audit all alternative power systems within health facilities to determine their ability to respond to power outages and their reliability, and where current systems are inadequate. Procurement of emergency power system is required,” an excerpt of the statement said.
The minority also expressed concern about reports showing that power outages are contributing to increased morbidity and mortality among patients, especially those dependent on public health facilities.
They argue that the government’s apparent reluctance to address the issue is unjust and shows disrespect for the Ghanaian people.
“Amidst these events, the government has refused to heed wise advice to publish load reduction schedules so that struggling Ghanaians and businesses can plan their lives. It is beginning to cause damage to critical medical facilities across the country,” he added.
