Traders at the Kumasi Central Market and Used Clothing Traders Association have issued a stern warning of five days of sustained protests if the second phase of the Kejetia redevelopment project is not resumed promptly.
Construction on the project stopped in December 2022 after the contractor withdrew from the site.
Traders blamed the work stoppage on the country’s debt restructuring agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
Despite government assurances that construction will resume after receiving the first part of the US$3 billion IMF bailout, progress remains stalled.
The site is now overgrown with weeds and infested with reptiles, much to the displeasure of affected industry groups.
As a result, they are calling on the government to quickly complete the project to fulfill its commitments or face the consequences of their grievances.
“We have waited patiently, but even though the first and second tranches have reached the government budget, work has not yet resumed and the project is now dependent on the weather. I did.”
“We are completely disappointed in the NPP government for neglecting and neglecting such a huge market complex that feeds so many traders who depend on market business for their livelihood,” the party said. This was said in a statement released on Monday, April 8th.
He also warned that if the government did not meet his demands, he would vote against the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the next election.
“We, therefore, urge the NPP government that we traders in the Ashanti region are on guard this time and that they are deceiving and defrauding us to vote for us in time for the December general elections. It sends a signal that you can’t come back for it.” Coming closer. “The nuclear power plant government must do what is necessary before the day of reckoning arrives,” the statement concluded.
