Bayer Leverkusen star Jeremy Friebong has gone viral after his jubilant interview following the club’s first ever Bundesliga triumph on Sunday.
Xabi Alonso’s side beat Werder Bremen 5-0 to claim the historic and elusive piece of silverware in a remarkable campaign that has seen Fribong emerge as one of the club’s biggest stars.
Frimpong – who began his career at Man City before moving to Celtic and eventually joining Leverkusen in 2021 – has been integral to the club’s stunning rise to the top of the table, contributing 12 goals and seven assists in all competitions.
While the 23-year-old has experience of winning silverware in Scotland after claiming the treble of Scottish Premiership, cup and league cup in 2019-20, he was understandably happy for Leverkusen’s monumental achievement to hold off giants Bayern Munich.
A clip of a relaxed Frimpong has now surfaced online with fans left in stitches by his candid attitude and positive energy while chatting to English Bundesliga interviewer Archie Rhind-Tutt.
Frimpong decided to lean on Rhind-Tutt’s shoulder, leaving him bemused, as he raved about Alonso’s impact at the club and spoke of their dream of lifting the Bundesliga – before catching the interviewer off guard with a compliment.
“I like the pink by the way, very nice, you look beautiful.”
He added: “Today was a special day for us as we knew a win would give us the championship. We had extra motivation and the coach (Alonso) didn’t even have to give us a speech because we were all excited. We did the job and we are Bundesliga champions, what can I say?’
“Everybody loves it in there,” he added. “The coach tried to wet me, Edmond Tapsoba tried to dunk me. I came here to hide!’
I mean Xabi Alonso changed Leverkusen, we’ve never won the league so he’s the first one to win it for us so he’s done an amazing job.
“Of course, the season is not over yet, but we can enjoy this moment. We know we won the Bundesliga, so we can enjoy it today.
“And tomorrow, our focus is on Thursday against West Ham.”
When asked what the secret to his positive attitude was, he replied: “What’s the secret? Just have a smile you know, just enjoy life because you only live once.
“So while we’re on this earth, we’re just having fun and loving others and giving potential energy and then life is good.”
