He highlighted the long-standing practice of naming power generation facilities based on their surroundings, citing examples such as Kupong Thermal Power Station in Kupong and Tema Thermal Power Station in Tema.
“If you look at the chronology of power plant names, first the location is used to name the power plant,” said Dr. Agyeman Obeng. “Usually plants are named according to their location. It’s just a matter of the geographical location of the plant and which comes first, and that’s always been the case.”
Dr. Agyemang-Obeng further stated that the decision to change the name of the AMERI power plant was not intended to discredit the NDC and its flag bearer, John Mahama, and also takes credit for doing the right thing. He explained that it was not intended as a compliment.
The renaming of the AMERI power plant to Kumasi 1 Thermal Power Plant has drawn criticism from the opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The NDC accused President Akufo-Addo’s administration of taking the impractical and costly decision to rename and relocate the factory to Anwomaso in the Ashanti Region.
The AMERI power plant was procured under a Build-Operate and Transfer Agreement in 2015 to produce 250 megawatts of electricity to strengthen Ghana’s energy generation capacity.
According to the agreement, Ghana was to take over full ownership of the power plant after paying $510 million within five years.
However, the NDC maintains that the decision to move the factory from Takoradi to Kumasi requires an investment of $35 million, which it believes is unnecessary.
