Minister of Communications and Digitization of Ghana, Ursula Owusu-Ekufulstated that the government has begun the process of developing local content legislation for the telecommunications sector.

The minister said the legislation aims to strengthen the nation’s ability to independently oversee its digital infrastructure, applications and services, reducing reliance on costly foreign consultants and contractors.

“We are in the process of enacting local content legislation for the telecommunications sector and have directed that certain categories of managed services in the telecommunications sector should be reserved exclusively for local Ghanaian companies“, he stated.
“This is the only way to develop our ability to manage our own digital infrastructure, applications and services. We must get rid of unhealthy reliance on expensive foreign consultants and contractors when we have suitable local alternatives.
“Many of these foreign companies award their contracts to local bodies and pocket the huge profits… of course, those who benefit from the current system and their partners will protest that we must put the country’s interest and our collective development first instead of some misplaced, short-term, individual gaint,” he added.

In the Ghanaian Petroleum Industry, there is legislation that states that Ghanaians should be given priority in terms of employment and benefit from the country’s resources. The law is expected to ensure that Ghana’s natural resources benefit Ghanaians.
