He noted that the initiative aims to focus attention on the neglected rail sector, which has suffered from years of underfunding and neglect by successive governments.
“…and you would agree that the rail sector had been ravaged by successive governments until then.
“We had the Ghana Railways Corporation running, but then the 2008 Act (779) was enacted to create the Ghana Railway Development Authority as the regulatory authority in charge of the sector. “What His Excellency John Kufuor did at the time was to have a company called Dar carry out a feasibility study for Tema Akosombo in 2007-2008,” he said. said Monday.
Mr Amewu referred to claims by National Democratic Congress Public Relations Officer Sammy Gyamfi that the Tema-Akosombo rail project is “the baby of the NDC”.
He said the project’s inception dates back to a framework drawn up by former President Kufuor, and that Dar conducted a feasibility study in 2007-2008.
“…people like Sammy Gyamfi.” [NDC’s Communication Officer] We need to stop misleading Ghanaians. NDC cannot claim full ownership of the Tema-Akosombo rail project. That was Kufuor’s framework,” he stressed.
He stressed that while the NDC government played a role in procuring the project, President Akufo-Addo’s administration re-evaluated the plan after taking office.
The Minister said President Akufo-Addo recognized the limitations of the original plan, particularly regarding its impact on the integrity of Akosombo Dam.
As a result, the government decided to relocate the railway to the Volta region.
“Also, there was no point in abolishing the railway in Akosombo. President Akufo-Addo insists on building railways in all parts of the country.”
