The Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei-Adutum, has introduced a new set of uniforms for basic school students as part of efforts to rebrand public education.
He said this was part of a rebranding effort by the Department of Education to improve the image of public schools.
He made this announcement during an unveiling presentation at the Accra University of Professional Sciences.
Dr. Adutum said: “Brown and yellow will not be seen. We are rebranding our public schools. Brown and yellow, blue and white will be gone and the uniforms will also change. This is President Akufo-Addo and Deputy Mahamudu Bawumia. This is the president’s Ghana.
“We have begun to change. There is no reason not to do so. Ghana deserves better and we will give Ghana better and give her something that we can all be proud of.” intend to.
Contrary to critics who say Dr. Adutum has abandoned basic schools, he insists that is not the case. He envisions a day when his parents will beg to enroll their children in basic public schools because he has set things right.
“So they say, ‘We give you credit, you did well in high school, you abandoned basic school, the kids are sitting under the tree, and you’re talking about drones.’ I would say.
“To them, I have an answer. I look forward to the day when parents will line up in front of schools and beg their children to be admitted. That day is and it is coming soon. That is Nana Akufo. -Started under ad.” he added.
However, the move has been condemned by Dr Clement Apark, deputy leader of the council’s education committee, who believes it has the wrong priorities.
He cited the neglect suffered by public basic schools and the arrears of capitation subsidies, which are critical to the functioning of basic education. Dr Apark questioned why resources were being spent on rebranding public basic schools rather than addressing these pressing challenges.
“Always, most of the government’s attention has been on the free high school policy and its implementation. As I speak, I am aware of the fact that capitol subsidies, which mean that public education is free. This is because this is a subsidy that was used by the principal of the basic school to organize activities such as cultural activities and sports activities, and is still in arrears for the 8th term.
“There are even situations where only 65% of the textbooks based on the new curriculum that came into effect in September 2019 have been distributed to public basic schools nationwide. There are 130 people in this country who cannot afford furniture. “Why would the government spend resources introducing new uniforms and rebranding public basic schools despite these obvious and debilitating challenges?”
This is the second across-the-board change under the Akufo-Addo government, following the 2019 change by Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, then Minister of Education and now Minister of Energy.
