Professor Koby Mensah
Professor Koby Mensah, a political scientist at the University of Ghana, says Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has proven that the country does not need an economist in the vice presidential position.
He said a comparison with the vice president’s past performance proves that the vice president doesn’t necessarily need an economist.
The question of whether he is an economist and a presidential candidate has recently been renewed following President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s nomination of Bawumia as his running mate. He said it was an added issue.
The lecturer was responding to a question on how Professor Nana Jane Opoku-Agyemang would chair the economic management team as she is not an economist.
“I pointed out that the argument that you’re an economist and you’re a vice presidential candidate and vice president is beside the point,” he said on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM’s Frontline.
He said this argument no longer holds true because he does not believe that the deputy director of a nuclear power plant will be an economist.
Professor Koby Mensah stressed that you don’t even need to be an economist to become president. “In fact, even when it comes to central bank operations, there is evidence that even non-economists are actually destroying central banks.
“The central bank needed an economist, but they have someone without an economic background,” he added.
The most important thing is that the person has a reputation for protecting the public’s interests, which includes being lean, not deceiving, and being honest and candid with the public. he explained.
“I think that’s what you need in a running mate.”
When asked if the NDC has been able to positively position the party’s brand through the outdoor activities of its vice-presidential candidate, he said, “Yes.”
